Tracheostomy placement is an infrequent but emergent procedure required in large animal practice. Pharyngeal trauma, calf diphtheria, tracheal masses and nasal bots or adenocarcinoma are the most common indications for placement of a tracheostomy to allow for treatment or palliation. In this module, we will discuss the differences between temporary and permanent tracheostomy, how to place each of them and how to maintain patency after surgery.
