Inside the Bovine Lameness Course Series, you’ll find:

  • We Will Not Be De – FEET – ed

This practical course dives into principles of management of bovine foot disease. You’ll get all my tips from visual to more invasive assessment of lame feet as well as interpretation of radiographs and joint taps. I cover medical management principles including systemic and regional antibiotic use – including some of my own research data, pain management, and overviews of paring out a foot, corn removal, claw amputation and facilitated ankylosis. This makes a great introduction for subsequent modules in the Bovine Lameness Course Series.

  • Septic Arthritis in Calves

This course will give you what you need to diagnose septic joints in neonatal calves and develop a diagnostic and treatment strategy to increase survival and long-term success. Dr. Melanie Boileau provides photos and videos to guide you through joint taps, flushing joints, antibiotic selection and pain management strategies. Plus, you get the benefit of her 20+ years of experience in providing owners accurate prognoses for these cases. This module will help you make a big impact on calf health and welfare!

  • Placing Casts and Splints

Want to be a Master Caster?!? This course is your one stop shop for everything you need to know to apply splints and casts safely and effectively. Fracture selection, exact padding placement, applying the cast material and knowing when it’s time to change out a cast or splint – it’s all right here in one place for you. There are photos of every single step and even recent research about water temperature and cast hardening times. It can be scary to place a cast and then wait….not knowing what’s going on under there – this module can help ensure that you are comfortable with every step!

  • Trimming Feet in Cattle

Know exactly what to do with those jankety feet! This comprehensive module covers everything you need to know using photos and videos of the exact process I use to get from the first toe cut to the final balanced product. I cover the most common lesions that you’ll see in feet and how to best manage those through your trim. With this module, you’ll go from just cutting off those long toes to effectively managing all aspects of the hoof.

  • Corn or Interdigital Fibroma Removal

Take your skills to the next level with this course on corn removal in cattle! I give you the exact criteria I use to determine if a corn is causing a lameness and whether or not it needs to be removed. Then, follow along with me step-by-step as I remove the corn. I’ll demonstrate the bandaging and aftercare plan I use to ensuring they get all healed up! You will be a master at corn removal in a half an hour!

  • Claw Amputation

Claw amputation is a skill every food animal should should have in their pocket. In this module I will walk you through video of every step in the process from evaluating the lameness to procedural anesthesia to the surgery and aftercare. This surgery provides rapid reduction in pain and return to function for deep digital sepsis while helping your client recover value.

  • Facilitated Ankylosis of the DIP Joint

Bad things happen to good cattle and a septic DIP joint is about the worst! For heavy cattle and valuable bulls and cows, saving the claw is a priority. Get all my tips about case selection, radiographic interpretation and the surgical plan to drill out the joint, get the infection under control, and facilitate fusion of the joint. I walk you all the way through the procedure so you can get these cattle back to optimal function.

“Your CE is 100% relevant to me. I find that most other CE is not as ‘in my lane’ as the courses you offer. I always seem to pick up something new every chance I have to look at your courses.” Dr. K.S.

These modules were created by Drs. Melanie Boileau and Meredyth Jones, who are both board certified specialists in Large Animal Internal Medicine with a food animal emphasis.
