Description

Pregnancy toxemia is a challenging and common metabolic disorder of sheep and goats. Here, the pertinent pathophysiology is covered to help guide treatment and prevention strategies (brace yourself, the phrase ‘TCA cycle’ does appear on a slide, but we only talk about why it matters and you will survive!) Diagnostic testing, at-home treatments, as well as in-hospital treatments (IV fluids, partial parenteral nutrition, insulin) are presented. Guidance for the client conversation regarding pregnancy maintenance and termination is provided as is client education for prevention in the herd or flock.
